Material Location surveyed the state of glass making and glass thinking in New York City.
Featuring seven artists, the show demonstrated a breadth of approaches to the cultural histories and physical properties of glass. The included works mined the intersections between glass and scientific knowledge, between the fluidity of material when molten and its solidity at room temperature, and between the present and the past.
Biba Schutz showed exquisite jewelry combining metal and bone-like slices of blown glass. Stefanie Pender made a complete skeleton out of a locavore glass she formulated herself called Cloudy is the Stuff of Stones. Ben Wright’s playful approach to glass and scientific apparati were in full effect in A Transmutation of Reality and A Short History of Phytoliths. An early Jes Fan demonstrated the transformative possibilities that would later become a hallmark of their work. Sarah Michalik’s contribution of weightless flameworked constructions called to mind webs of fiber optics. Jane Bruce’s Prime Numbers series winked at the role of production in glass art at all levels. And Shari Mendelson’s loving reproductions in glass and plastic of ancient glass vessels and sculptures query our very sense of old and new, utility and preciousness. It was a fun show!
