New Glass Now was a game-changing traveling exhibition documenting the innovation, skill, and conceptual ambition of artists, designers, and thinkers working in the challenging material of glass.
The show featured an incredible range of work including large-scale installations, finely crafted objects, performance, and video from more than 25 countries. It was a true testament to the incredible vitality and versatility of the material of glass and those that work with it.
Building off and celebrating the 40-year history of The Corning Museum’s flagship contemporary publication New Glass Review, I designed this exhibition to elaborate the publication’s democratic selection process. Artists, designers, and companies were invited to submit works through an open call, and more than 1400 individuals and groups from more than 50 countries heeded that call submitting more than 4000 objects for consideration. Then, using the New Glass method, a panel of guest curators and I chose 100 works for inclusion in the exhibition.
The New Glass method does not require complete consensus and makes the selection process visible by including the initials of the selector’s on the labels and in the catalogue. To underscore the fact these selections were made by people and could be agreed or disagreed with, each label contained a by-lined quote from one of the selectors about the work and why it spoke to them. My aim was to inspire viewers to develop their own connection to the objects (or to reject them!) and to know that they too have valid sensibilities about artwork.
New Glass Now was accompanied by a companion exhibition New Glass Now: Context and Rui Sasaki: I am a Pluviophile, and a catalog of the same name.
